What is civet?
Civet is a paste from the anal glands of an animal known as a civet cat. Its odor is strong, even putrid as a pure substance, but once diluted it is pleasantly and sweetly aromatic. It is prepared for use in perfumery by solvent extraction to yield either a tincture, an absolute, or a resinoid. It is used in a similar way to castoreum, ambergris, and deer musk. Other noted amimalic substances.
Where does civet come from?
Civet comes from an animal known as a civet cat which is a small, lean, mostly nocturnal mammal native to tropical Asia and Africa, especially the tropical forests. The term civet applies to over a dozen different species. Most of the species diversity is found in southeast Asia. The best-known species is the African Civet,Civettictis civetta,which historically has been the main species from which a musky scent used in perfumery, also referred to as "civet", was obtained.
Is this ethical?
The civet paste I use does not involve the harm or killing of any animals in any way. The civet my supplier gets is from a source in Ethiopian that treats the animals with the respect and dignity they deserve.
